When a brand contacts me about a new line of products from a company I already love I get excited. When DecoArt contacted me about their new line of Americana Multi Surface Satin paints and stencils I knew I had to try them out! They sent me out so many colors I had a hard time deciding which one to pick! Good news is Americana Multi-Surface Satins are available for purchase at Michaels, A.C. Moore, Hobby Lobby, and other fine craft retailers. I don’t know about your town but in my town we have all of these stores sometimes twice over!I narrowed down my choices to this small selection and in the end went with Costal Waters as my main color! But enough about all these fun colors let’s get to the good stuff – How to DIY your own messenger bag.
– Plain bag
– Americana Multi Surface Paint
– Houndstooth Stencil
– Stencil Brushes
– Logo (optional)
– Spray Adhesive
If you plan on using more than one stencil I suggest blocking off the area you do not want the houndstooth to cover. I did this by creating a vinyl stencil of our logo and sticking it to the bag.
To make sure your colors pop go ahead and add a coat of white to your stencil and leave to dry in place.
Figure out where you want your stencil to start. I wanted mine to stay within the constraints of the stitching. Apply spray adhesive to the back of your houndstooth stencil and get started stenciling your paint onto your bag.
When moving onto other areas of the bag you will want to check for your overlap. This particular houndstooth stencil has it’s over lap a few lines over. Once find the overlap, continue stenciling till the entire bag is covered. Keep in mind your original stencil and try to make sure not to go over into that area.
The multi-surface paints dry fairly quickly so by the time you get done with your houndstooth stencil you should be able to go back over the other area with your final paint colors. I chose a grey color and orange sherbet to fill in the rest of the logo stencil. Once that is painted just remove the vinyl stencil.
I gave my bag about an hour to dry before using it. It was dry much sooner then that but I was being overly cautious. I was able to get my bag done just in time for the Haven Conference in Atlanta and let me tell you the ladies loved my bag as much as I did!
There is even better news! Now until October 31, 2013 you can buy for Americana Multi-Surface Satin paints and get $3 back! I already love a good deal but getting money back is like music to my ears!
What are you ready to makeover?
